What a true inspiration he is ! The spirit, the talent and most of all the resilience and motivation Quincy Jones had while engaging in a life-long music carreer : record producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, arranger, a film and television producer, 80 Grammy Award nominee, 28 Grammy and a Grammy Legend Award winner.

His career vision while he was 11 was being a gangster since it was all he had around him as a child ! So howcome he became a legend instead of a criminal ? Talent ? He had it all, of course ! On the other hand, what’s really astonishing for me as a recruiter is his transformative competencies which created miracles both for him and for his community, his people. Quincy Jones composed many film songs in an era where it was forbidden for African-Americans to do that! Unbelievable right ? Maybe in near future where knowledge is everywhere than before people will say that it was very unusual for non-technical managers to be engaged in innovations! Statuquos and statistics of failure in different formats exists as always and it is the transformative competencies which makes a person uniquely successful in his/her career and live a fulfilled life.

While watching the documentary I couldn’t help but note some impressing qutoes he uses which are a clear demonstration of his strong, solid competencies, the transformative compentencies that lies beneath this legendary person, at least as I make sense of him.

Here are some quotes from the Netflix documentary ‘Quincy Jones : A Life Beyond Measure’ linked to his competencies via my recruiter perspective

.

Competency : INTEGRITY

When a person places higher value on integrity, they are at their best when it seems like no one else is watching. They win the trust of their peers, colleagues, stakeholders, and the organization. They set the highest standard of personal behavior for their peers to follow. They do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. They practice what they preach. .

Competency : SELF-ESTEEM

As most already know, ego and self-esteem are totally different. Self-esteem is believing in one’s own capability to select an effective approach to accomplish a task or activity in increasingly challenging circumstances. Behaviours demonstrating self-esteem include : Trusting one’s own ability to take on activities, maintaining confidence when challenged, positioning self as an expert leader when appropriate, behaving constructively when difficult to do so.

.

Competency : INDUSTRIOUS

Working, persisting through setbacks and challenges, staying focused and making good use of time leads one to be industrious.

.

Competency : ACCOUNTABILITY

Personal accountability is key to getting work done and getting it done right. It is self-motivation at the highest level. It is doing what you commit to do without needing someone else prodding you to get it done. Leaders who practice personal accountability deliver the highest-level results to their organization because they don’t give themselves any other option. .

Competency : RESILIENCE

Great way to phrase resilience ! A Person demonstrates resilience and stress tolerance by continuing to perform effectively when faced with time pressures, adversity, disappointment, or opposition. A person with this competency remains focused, composed, and optimistic in difficult situations and bounces back from failures or disappointments.

.

Competency : AWARENESS

Such a man! He is Quincy Jones with 7 children. He is so modest and open to development that he states this weakness, just like that! You know what I felt watching him say this ? At this age, he has the hope to change. He wishes he fixes this weakness.

He truly believes this is possible. At the age of 85, he thinks there is room for improvement. This is where you nearly fall off the chair with happiness in a job interview: When a candidate you admire so much admits a true weakness.

The gracefull strength this man has! It all comes down to all this :
Your integrity -the human being you are, your self-esteem -how little your ego is, how industrious you are -your level of knowledge in your line of work, your accountability-your engagement in your job and responsibilities, your resillience-your strength to get back on your feet, your awareness-knowing yourself including your weaknessess.

Would you like to be a gift to yourself, the ones in your close circle, to colleagues in your job, your loved ones in the family ? Do exactly as he says! Who knows one might end up being a gift to the whole world, just like him !

Let’s finish with more wisdom from the legend himself :
